James Benthem - PhD, L.P.
Dr. Benthem has been serving the Northern Michigan community since 1992. Previously, he was a staff psychologist for 12 years at Pine Rest Christian Hospital. Dr. Benthem specializes in anxiety disorders and treatment of depressive disorders. He works with a broad age spectrum from children through the geriatric population.
Steve Osborn - PhD, L.P., BCFE
Dr. Steve Osborn has a PhD degree in psychology from the Union Institute of Professional Psychology, specializing in both clinical and forensic psychology. He is a licensed psychologist who has worked in the mental health field since 1976.
He is a board-certified forensic psychologist, Diplomate of the American Board of Psychological Specialties and Fellow of the American College of Forensic Examiners. He has received certification in clinical hypnosis from the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, certification from the International Board of Child Psychotherapists, and registration through the Association of Play Therapy.
Approximately one-half of Dr. Osborn’s practice is with children and adolescents and one-half with adults. He has expertise in the evaluation and treatment of the various developmental disabilities, Autism and Asperger, attention deficit disorder, learning disabilities, mood and anxiety disorders, dissociative and post-traumatic stress disorders, thought disturbance, personality disorders, behavioral disturbances, alcohol and drug problems, work-related stress, and relationship issues.
Dr. Osborn’s forensic practice has focused on custody work and other issues related to the best interests of the child, civil competency, evaluation (risk assessment) and treatment of sexual offenders, victims of sexual abuse, domestic violence, and parental fitness. He has been qualified as an expert witness in a number of jurisdictions.
Michelle provides therapeutic services to children, adolescents, and adults. Michelle has over 20 years of experience working with family issues including domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse and neglect.
Other areas of interest include body image issues, anxiety, depression, stress, grief, divorce adjustment, relationship and parenting issues, behavior management, and other traumatic life experiences. Michelle is a Certified Trauma Consultant.
Bryan Salminen - PhD, LPC
Dr. Bryan R. Salminen is a licensed professional counselor, a licensed marriage and family therapist, and a clinical member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. Dr. Salminen has served as pastor for over 30 years, a professor, and a therapist in a variety of settings.
He is the cofounder and developer of Zoe (www.zoescore.com), an online marital and premarital counseling tool used by over 5,000 clinicians. Dr. Salminen specializes in marriage therapy, working with couples or individuals within the marriage context.
He works with individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, meaning and purpose in life, and spirituality issues. He sees clients who deal with a variety of presenting problems and help them focus on strengths, solutions, and resilience.
Sydnie Simmons - Psy.D., LLP
Dr. Simmons is a clinical psychologist who has worked in the mental health field since 2000. She is currently specializing in women’s mental health issues related to reproductive function such as perinatal mood disorders, issues related to postpartum adjustment, pregnancy loss, birth trauma, bonding and attachment, and therapeutic support for those facing reproductive cancer diagnosis.
In addition, she provides individual therapy to adolescents and adults for anxiety reduction, stress management, depression, and trauma. Sydnie provides psychological testing and diagnosis of mental health disorders.
Her theoretical orientation is based upon the client-centered philosophy and incorporates the benefits of cognitive behavioral, psychodynamic, and systems theories in understanding and facilitating change.
Milinda Cuddeback - MA, LPC, SCL
Milinda is a Michigan-Licensed Professional Counselor who provides therapeutic services to children, adolescents, and adults. Milinda is certified in the areas of drug and alcohol addiction, school guidance and careers, trauma, and loss.
In addition, Milinda is experienced in the areas of body image issues and eating disorders, self-harming behaviors, anxiety or stress, depression, adolescent behavior management, family conflict, sexual assault, and domestic violence.
Danette Crozier - LMSW
Danette is a clinical social worker with over 17 years of experience working with children, adolescents, and families. She is currently working with children and adults who need support for anxiety, depression, life changes and adjustments, school-related stress, and trauma. Danette is trained to do a range of social-emotional evaluations as well as individual therapy.
Gunther Schwartz - PhD, LLP
Dr. Schwartz earned his PhD from
Andrews University in Berrien Springs, MI. He specializes in the treatment of children, adolescents, and adults using individual, marital, and family sessions. Dr. Schwartz has more than 20 years of experience working as a clinician and administrator in the mental health field.
He consults schools, businesses, and organizations relating to mental health, wellness, and performance. Dr. Schwartz brings a warm, caring, and energetic presence to the counseling experience and his clients appreciate the open, engaging, and active way he conducts the counseling session. He integrates a Christian perspective into the research-based, best practice counseling modalities that he uses.
Gary Berkebile - MA, LLP
Gary is a School Psychologist who has worked in two intermediate school districts in Michigan for 44 years. As a member of our team, he has provided diagnostic services for learning disabilities, cognitive and emotional impairments, Autism, ADHD, and other special education disabilities.
He has provided assessments for preschool children through adults. Gary has provided diagnostic services to adolescents and adults in two residential delinquent centers in Michigan, a youth correctional institution, and Michigan Rehabilitation Services as well as intellectual assessments in determination of disability services.
Elena Zagarskas - M.S., TLLP (Our Intern)
Elena has enjoyed a variety of placements and experiences in the mental health field with under-served adults and children since 2003. She completed her B.A. in Psychology at Oberlin College in 2007 and her M.S. in Community Counseling at Gannon University in 2010. She is currently a doctoral candidate pursuing a Psy.D. in Counseling Psychology at Carlow University located in Pittsburgh, PA.
Her doctoral program has a special focus on integrating the values of social justice with psychology, which strongly informs Elena's therapy perspectives. Elena previously worked as a Licensed Professional Counselor in Pennsylvania and gained experience treating adults with a range of mood and personality disorders as well as children with autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, and anxiety.
She also developed special interests in treating adults with eating disorders, body image concerns, and personality disorders. Additional clinical interests include schizophrenia, grief and loss, and spirituality. Elena is also interested in formal psychological assessment and is currently expanding her experience in this area.
In therapy, Elena works from an existential perspective in which themes of meaning-making, authenticity, responsibility, and Interpersonal Connectedness inform her approach.
She integrates this framework primarily with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) supplemented with relaxation techniques, motivational interviewing, and other skill sets to match the interests and needs of her clients. In addition, she welcomes and encourages therapeutic creative art-based work in sessions with both children and adults.
